Building a business from scratch is messy. It’s exciting, rewarding, and sometimes, flat-
out humbling.
At Juiced Fuel, we’ve learned a lot over the past few years—but a lot of it was learned
the hard way. And if you’re a fellow entrepreneur or considering launching a business
(or franchise), we want to be honest about the missteps we’ve made—so maybe you
don’t have to make the same ones.
Here are just a few of the bumps on our road:
- We Didn’t Promote Before We Launched
This might be our biggest regret. When we started Juiced Fuel, we were so focused on
operations—permits, trucks, processes—that we forgot something crucial: people need
to know you exist before you open.
We should’ve started building buzz months earlier. A pre-launch waitlist, local
partnerships, teaser posts, you name it. By the time we launched, we had an amazing
service… but no audience ready to use it. I think we were focused on perfecting the
process and uncertainties of opening in general.
Lesson learned: Marketing doesn’t wait for perfection. Start showing up before you’re
“ready.” - We Spent Too Much, Too Soon on the Wrong Tools
We bought into the hype. Everyone said HubSpot was the gold standard for CRM and
automation. So we signed up… and spent a lot. Don’t get us wrong—HubSpot is a powerful tool. But it wasn’t the right fit for our business at the stage we were in. It was like buying a Ferrari when we just needed a reliable pickup truck. We ended up paying for features we didn’t use and spending time learning a platform that didn’t serve our model. Lesson learned: Invest in the right tools for the size and shape of your business—not just the flashiest ones. - We Chose the Wrong Type of Marketing
Early on, we spent money on ads and sponsorships that looked good on paper but
didn’t translate into customers. Magazine features, marketing agencies, and even
certain digital campaigns sounded impressive… but didn’t move the needle. Clicks are
great but they don’t close the deal.
What we’ve learned is that performance matters more than appearance. Social media
reels, word-of-mouth, referral programs, and hyper-local SEO bring far more return than
anything glossy or generic.
Lesson learned: Track everything—and double down on what actually works. - We Got Burned by Scheduling Mistakes
Mobile fueling runs on logistics. A missed delivery window, a double-booked route, or a
lack of driver coverage can mess up an entire day—and hurt customer trust.
We’ve had moments where we underestimated demand, overestimated how far we
could stretch one truck, or didn’t build in time margins for emergencies. And yep, we’ve
had to apologize and fix it on the fly.
Lesson learned: Build margin into your schedule. Don’t let optimism sabotage
execution.
Why Share All This?
Because pretending we’ve had it all figured out from day one doesn’t help anyone.
We’re proud of where Juiced Fuel is today—but even more proud of the growth that’s
come from our mistakes.
